Michael Rothschild was born in 1947 in Maine, where he has lived all his life.  For more than fifty years, he has made his home on a 200-year-old hilltop farm in the mountains of western Maine.  In addition to working the family farm and maintaining large apple orchards with his extended family, he is a writer, sculptor, and printmaker. His first collection of stories, Rhapsody of a Hermit, was published by Viking Press in 1973.  His stories and novellas have been published and anthologized numerous times in Best American Short Stories, The Paris Review, Works in Progress, Antaeus, and he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. As a sculptor, he works in stone, wood, lead, and bone. His work was featured in the art magazine Jiangsu, in the People’s Republic of China, where he lectured on fiction and sculpture in Beijing, Xian, and Nanjing. In 1990, Wondermonger was published by Viking Press. Jubilate: Sculpture/Works of Michael Rothschild was published in a limited edition by the Ascensius Press. A second book by the Ascensius Press, Sculpture and Tales, was released in spring of 2026, to coincide with Graven Images.  

Graven Images is Michael's first exhibition in the United States.  The black slate stones in the exhibition were quarried in Monson, Maine. For these stones, therefore, this is a return and a homecoming.
